I started straightening my hair at 13
Straightening your hair - a nightmare for not only naturally curly hair but anyone’s hair. According to The Natural Haven, a blog written by a PhD holder in Material Science, “You will have to trade moisture for straightening…the hair may return to a ‘normal’ looking state but it will not be exactly the same”, therefore straightening one’s hair can cause irreversible damage.
I didn’t start properly researching how to take care of my curls until this past May, during quarantine. Not having anywhere to go meant I didn’t have to straighten my hair for three months. My hair health improved and my natural curl pattern began to reform. I started researching the Internet high and low for curly girl advice. I finally worked up the courage and began my hair journey in September of 2020.
It’s officially been six months and I’ve finally made it to a place where I can say my curls not only look better than ever but my hair is the healthiest it’s ever been. What’s my saving grace you may ask, the curly girl method!
What is the curly girl method?
The curly girl method is a hair washing, protection and styling regime originally created by Lorraine Massey – author of Curly Girl: The Handbook.
The curly girl method:
- Eliminates the use of silicones and sulfates
- Adds more moisture to your hair through after shower products
- Cuts back on the use of heat and styling tools significantly, if not fully
- Encourages you to not use combs, brushes, alcohol or fragrances
When starting a new hair routine, especially one that is so detailed, things can get confusing. I know it was for me. I had to play around with different densities of products and techniques before I found what works for my hair. Everyone’s hair is different, and what works for some may not work for others, but don’t get discouraged. Curly human hair toppers and wigs and why they’re so hard to find
European ancestry is the largest makeup of the U.S. population. In a study conducted by the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, they found that within people of European ancestry, 45% have straight hair, 40% have wavy hair and 15% have curly hair.
