How did it come to the point where Methotrexate was prescribed to you?
I was diagnosed with Alopecia when I was six years old, and throughout my childhood, I tried just about every treatment imaginable. Creams, ointments, foams, oral medications, steroid injections into my scalp, and different forms of immunotherapy. I was always chasing the hope that the next treatment would finally work.
By the time I entered seventh grade, after years of disappointment, my dermatologist told me there was one last option we could try: methotrexate. It felt like one final chance to get my hair back.
He explained that it would be the most intensive treatment I had ever taken, but what I didn't fully understand at the time was what methotrexate actually was. I knew it was a powerful medication, but I didn't grasp that it was also a chemotherapy drug used in certain cancers, autoimmune diseases, and other serious medical conditions. As a child, I didn't have the context to appreciate the weight of that decision or the questions I might have asked if I had.
