WHAT IS THE CURLY GIRL METHOD?

The curly girl method is a hair washing, protection and styling regime originally created by Lorraine Massey – author of Curly Girl: The Handbook

The curly girl method:

  • Eliminates the use of silicones and sulfates
  • Adds more moisture to your hair through after shower products
  • Cuts back on the use of heat and styling tools significantly, if not fully
  • Encourages you to not use combs, brushes, alcohol or fragrances

When starting a new hair routine, especially one that is so detailed, things can get confusing. I know it was for me. I had to play around with different densities of products and techniques before I found what works for my hair. Everyone’s hair is different, and what works for some may not work for others, but don’t get discouraged. Practice makes progress!

WHY ARE CURLY HAIRPIECES SO HARD TO FIND

European ancestry is the largest makeup of the U.S. population. In a study conducted by the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, they found that within people of European ancestry, 45% have straight hair, 40% have wavy hair and 15% have curly hair.

Along with this only 2% of the population has naturally blonde hair, as hair tends to get darker with age. So if you're looking for a blonde curly topper or wig, your search pool just turned into a small pond.

This data shows that finding virgin curly human hair that someone is willing to donate is no easy task. This is why a lot of wig and topper makers will perm pieces to mimic that desired curly look. A perm is a great way to achieve the curly look on a hairpiece. The treatment usually lasts three - six months depending on your care and upkeep.

With that being said, the curly girl method has been the perfect regime to upkeep the curly hairpieces that come into our shop! I refreshed this wavy topper using the method and it looks brand new.

WEARING WIGS HAS SAVED MY CURLY HAIR

As someone who wears wigs for the main purpose of changing up my look, having the option to change my hair color, style and texture anytime I want without damaging my natural hair has been the absolute best!

When I share my wig transformations, I always get the comments like:

“Why are you wearing a wig, your natural hair is beautiful”

“You need to learn to love your natural hair”

“Learn to take care of your real hair and you won’t need wigs”

Let me set it straight, I LOVE my natural hair (even if it doesn’t love me sometimes haha). I love my natural hair so much that I have chosen to never dye it and ruin my curly texture. Instead I choose to wear wigs because not only is it exciting and fun but it protects my natural hair! If that’s not love and I don’t know what is!

Overall the Curly Girl Method has helped me learn to love my hair more and connect with it in a way I never have before and for that I couldn’t be more grateful!
