3 Ways To Care For Your Wig (Human + Synthetic) For Longer Wear

If you’re a beginner to wearing alternative hair i.e. wigs and hair toppers, then you know how overwhelming it can be to try to learn everything at once when it comes to the do's and don'ts of wearing hair.

And it can be a bit intimidating to know how to care for your human hair wig or synthetic hair wig at first glance but don’t worry we’re here to help! Let’s start with some of the basics - here are three ways to care for your human hair wig or synthetic wig for longer wear.

1. Wash your wig regularly.

A big part of maintaining the quality of your human hair wig or synthetic hair wig is by making sure you are washing it. Now, how often you wash your wig is dependent on how often you wear your wig.

We like to go by this rule of thumb: if you wear your human hair wig or synthetic wig daily (almost every day) then we recommend washing it every week, if you wear your human hair wig or synthetic wig regularly but not every day then we recommend washing it every other 2-3 weeks.

If you’re reading this and immediately start thinking okay well how do I wash my wig? We have both an in-depth tutorial and a quick step by step tutorial on how to wash your human hair wig or synthetic wig!

Another important note to add when it comes to washing your wig is making sure you are using the right products as well.

With a human hair wig - we recommend using a sulfates-free, moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. With a synthetic hair wig - we recommend using a shampoo with sulfates. The sulfates will essentially coat the synthetic hair strands and keep the hair from fraying.

2. Brush your wig before/after every use.

Another way to make your wig last longer is by brushing your human hair wig or synthetic wig before and after every use to ensure that the hair does not get tangled or matted. A key tip: brush your wig from the bottom up making sure to not pull or tug the hair as you go.

For a synthetic hair wig, we recommend using a detangler spray when brushing your wig. Our favorite one to use is the Jon Renau detangler spray.

3. Store your wig properly.

Lastly, if you are not using your human hair wig or synthetic wig it is important to properly store your wig to ensure you are effectively preserving the quality.

We recommend storing your human hair wig or synthetic hair wig on a wig head or wig rack (really anything that allows you to hang up your wig). This method allows you to maintain the style and shape of your wig. Tip: Store your wig in a cool, dry place far from direct sunlight to keep it from becoming dry and dull.

Another method we recommend is using a satin or silk bag to store your human hair wig or synthetic wig (making sure your wig is completely dry) as the material causes less friction and keeps the hair strands from tangling or tearing. This is also a perfect way to store your wig when traveling!
